Sharing the Limelight – Sharing the Stage

2nd and 3rd February, produced by  Sara Clifford/Inroads and Jackie Alexander/Theatre Royal Brighton.

We had a wonderful time at our performance installation, sharing the learning from our project.

With an exhibition from the 50s/60s of clothes people might wear to the theatre, to the programmes and posters they would have seen, to the dances and music they might have listened to (with Dorothy’s Shoes and Alison David), the audience were led by Mr J B Sackville, the genial Theatre Manager until 1963, through the theatre where they met different characters, read by our volunteers.

Based on the 20 interviews collected so far, and some characters created from the archive, Sara created a script where we met audience members, an usherette, Enid- the formidable Box Office manager -  a stage technician and Mrs Redman, the manager of the Last Gulp backstage bar. We met Billy Props who worked at the theatre for over 50 years, danced in the foyer and the stalls, and heard some of the theatre ghost stories..

As a pilot project for a bigger event to come, this was a resounding success!

Audience feedback included

“I thoroughly enjoyed  it - what wonderful stories you uncovered and what a treat to be shown around the theatre like that. .. I felt connected to theatre and city in new ways..’

And another said:

‘Loads of fun and very moving ‘

Watch this space for more to come later in the year..
