Breaking the Silence

Breaking the Silence was a Heritage Lottery Funded Inroads project about the Spanish Flu pandemic and Brighton in 1918/19 at the end of World War One.

‘There was always a silence…’

(oral history interviewee, 2019)

This Inroads community arts project explored the history of the Spanish Flu in partnership with Brighton General Hospital and the University of Brighton. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the performance and exhibition were interrupted.

The material has been curated and can be seen on the Spanish Flu In Brighton website.

We’re also working on a research project with the University of Brighton to include a future performance that will explore the theme of silence, then and now.
